St. Paul & Minneapolis, MN | August 31, 2023 — Tlalnepantla Arts is pleased to present the 11th annual Festival de las Calaveras, Twin Cities Latinx Music and Arts Festival.
Festival events begin on Saturday, October 21 at the Union Depot in St. Paul. We are honored to present, for the first time in Minnesota, the internationally recognized bands from Mexico: Tijuana No!, Los Cogelones, and Mare Advertencia. Also featuring performances by the Twin City’s own Lady Midnight, Danza Mexica Huitzilin, and the Palabristas Spoken Word Collective, calavera face-painting, family art activities, multimedia art, community ofrenda, art vendors, food by Chef Hector Ruiz, and large interactive puppets and alebrijes created by Gustavo Boada interacting with audience members — on bikes!
Celebrations continue Saturday, November 4 at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. This event brings live musical performances from Jarana Beat (New York City), La Dame Blanche (Cuba), Chicha Roots (Chicago), and Twin City’s own Mariachi Estelar, Danza Mexica Yolotl, Palabristas Spoken Word Collective, calavera face-painting, multimedia art, Frida’s Food truck, and more. An exciting addition to this year’s activities is the first ever Catrina / Catrin / Catrinx Pasarela.
“We are thrilled,” says local Chicana artist and festival founder Deborah Ramos, to bring such successful Latinx performers to Minnesota for this year’s live musical lineup. One highlight is the contribution of original music to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack by Mare Advertencia.
Founded in 2013, Festival de las Calaveras serves as the longest-running Día de los Muertos festival in the metro area and provides a platform for Latinx artistic excellence. It is unique because it addresses limited resources and support for high quality, annually produced Latinx arts showcases in Minnesota.
Featured art centers around the traditional and contemporary celebration of Día de los Muertos, known in English as Day of the Dead, an indigenous Mexican tradition that brings families and communities together to honor the memory of ancestors and departed loved ones.
Ms. Ramos established this annual event with these guiding principles: build community through Latinx arts; connect and grow the Twin Cities diverse Latinx arts community; recognize and expose local Latinx artists to the Latinx and broader Twin Cities audiences; promote artistic collaborations among local, national, and international Latinx artists.
